Rimmel Stay Matte Powder | Worth The Hype?

Thursday, 7 November 2013

Once again, I've fallen for the hype. Although this time I don't feel so guilty as the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder only set me back a meer £4. I was curious about this powder after seeing the likes of Tanya Burr raving about it so I thought I would give it a go myself, in the hope that I would love it so much it would replace my MAC Studio Fix Powder which usually sets me back around £20.

The Rimmel Stay Matte Powder is supposed to provide you with long lasting shine control, something I definitely need for long days at work so I've been putting it to the test over the past few weeks and I have to say, my opinion is mixed.

The one thing I really didn't like about this powder is the coverage. I got the shade 'peachy' as I have quite fair skin, I decided against the translucent version of this powder as I like my powder to give me a bit of coverage, like my MAC Studio Fix does. This powder is very sheer, so if you want a full coverage look, I would opt for a full coverage foundation such as Estee Lauder Double Wear or MAC Studio Sculpt to cover any blemishes and even out your skin tone. One other thing I didn't like about this powder was the smell. It seems odd to me that a powder would have a scent as it's not something which people usually smell before they buy and none of my previous powders have had a scent, but this one smells slightly soapy and although it isn't a horrible smell, I could do without it.

The packaging also isn't up to much. It doesn't feel very secure so I don't carry this around with me in case it breaks in my bag, but for £4 I can't really complain too much and it does it's job.

Now on to the positives! One thing I really did like about this powder was the finish. It set my make up and took away the shine without making my skin look cakey - something that is quite hard to achieve on my dry/combination skin. I did need to touch up throughout the day but I do usually have to do this so this wasn't a massive issue for me.

Have you tried the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder? I'd love to know your thoughts!

  1. I bought this for the exact same reason after watching Tanya Burr haha. I do like it when applying and has a good finish but I have to say I've had better when it comes to lasting power. I have to touch up quite a few times throughout the day. But for the price, I'm quite happy with it :) xxx

    1. I think if it cost more I wouldn't buy it, but for £4 I can't really complain about having to touch up, although I still cant bring myself to stop buying my MAC powder! xx

    1. If I was you I would save my £3 and invest in something better quality but I've also heard that it works really well on some people xx

  3. I have this, I use it every day to set my foundation. As far as I know, its not really meant to have 'coverage' - more just as a setting powder? at least, that's all I use it for. Its never let me down and I never have to touch up, but my skin isn't super oily.

I HATE the packaging. Seriously, put it in a compact like a normal powder, Rimmel! I can't take it with me because like you said, I'm pretty sure it won't hold up. And there's no mirror, so....I'd need to carry a mirror separately, which is silly.

  4. I use this as a touch up powder during the day and I agree that the packaging is awful! The lid never ever stays on!!! But at least the powder gives a nice finish and like you said at such a low price point it we can't complain toooo much. I've never noticed the scent, I bet now it's all I notice about it haha

  7. I have really oily skin and found this to work so well (I used the transparent shade)! I had to stop using it because I was afraid it was breaking me out with the talc.

    1. I've been breaking out quite badly recently actually, I never even thought that this could be the cause! xx

  8. I used to have the shade transparent and I found that it worked really well. I'm not a big fan of powders and won't spend a fortune on premium brand powders but I thought it did the job pretty well. At the moment I'm using the Soap & Glory One Heck of a Blot and is GREAT :o). Xx

    1. I do love the finish, just not the coverage. I was hoping it would replace my MAC powder but unfortunatly I just can't let go of my MAC one! xx

  10. I used to use this everyday, but I need to use a lot of it.. it then makes me question whether I would be better off just paying a bit more for something that lasts haha xx

    1. I think sometimes it's better to splash out on a high end product that you know works well if it's something you use everyday. I'd reccomend MAC Studio Fox powder, it's brilliant :) xx

  11. I much prefer miracle matte by 17 as it is cheap, gives coverage and the packaging is better and includes a mirror! my stay mattes always break when they are used about half way which is so annoying xx

  14. I really like to use this as a setting powder in Transparent. I use it specifically for the matte finish and not the coverage. I use a very thin layer of it it in conjunction with my everyday powder.
