When To Throw Your Make-Up Away | Make-Up Life Expectancies

Tuesday, 12 November 2013

Hey Ladies! I love having a big make up collection and over the past few months, mine has grown considerably but there comes a point when every make up product must die. As sad as it is to throw away your make up, it has to be done unless you want to damage your skin, eyes, etc. I know a lot of people don't know how long to hold onto certain make up products, so I thought I would pop this post up all about how long to hold onto each make up item. I was quite shocked to see how long I had been holding onto things and it's about time I had a bit of a clear out of things which I haven't used in a while or just don't suit me. After all, I need room for all my new purchases which I'm sure I'm about to make!

Mascara - For me, mascara is the worst culprit for going out of date and causing problems. I can always tell when my mascara has gone out of date as it irritates my eyes and is generally uncomfortable. Ideally you should throw your mascara away every 3 to 4 months after you first open it to stop any infections causing, some of which can be quite nasty! I'd reccomend only having one or two open at a time so you use them up instead of having 4 or 5 go out of date at the same time.

Foundation - When your foundation goes out of date, it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and can cause all sorts of problems with blemishes, redness and infections. Foundations usually last around 9 months however if your foundation becomes thicker or thinner, this is usually a sign that it has gone out of date.

Pressed Powders - Pressed powders have the longest lifespan, lasting around 2 years as they have no liquid in them. This includes blushers, eyeshadows, bronzers, highlighters and setting powder. I definitely need to have a check through my make up as I'm sure I've still got eye shadows from years ago or blushers which I've gone off!

Cream products - Cream products include cream blushers and eyeshadows and gel eyeliner and typically last around 6 months but if there is a change in the texture this can be a sign that your make up has gone off and that it's time to chuck it. You don't want to be putting gone off cream eyeshadow or eyeliner near your eye! Pencil eyeliner also falls into this category although it isn't typically a cream product.

As a general rule, any change in colour, texture, smell or look is usually a sign that a product has gone off.

I hope you learnt something from this post and found it helpful, let me know in the comments below if you'd like to see more of these kinds of posts! I'm off to check through my stash now for out dated products!

  2. I'm with you-- mascara and eyeliners are usually the products I get rid of the fastest, I just feel like it's never worth the risk infecting or irritating your eyes with something!

  5. Such a helpful post. I'm definitely guilty of this, especially mascara. Right now I'm using waterproof mascara because my eyes are watering because of my flu, even though I know it's irritating my eyes. This post has given me a kick in the arse to throw it out. Thank you :)

  8. I'm such a culprit for not throwing away make-up - I'm a hoarder! I even keep old mascara tubes cause I like the packaging! But I'm thing I'm good at is only having one or two mascaras open at a time so I finish them within three or four months anyway! Lovely post, I always find ones like these very useful! :) xx

  10. I really enjoyed reading this post because I can never tell when a product is past its date unless it's WAY gone and I'm like "whoa there buddy you need to meet the trash can, pronto!" But when do you know lip products are out of date or so they last for a pretty long time?

    1. It's so easy to forget to throw make up away unless it starts going really bad! Lip products are a lot like cream products so they last around 6 months to a year! xx
