Going for the Chop...My Experience

Wednesday, 11 March 2015

Sorry about the awful iPhone quality!

If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram, then you'll probably know that I recently took the plunge and cut my hair shorter, I say shorter instead of short because it's nowhere near a pixie crop but it's still shoulder skimming which is pretty drastic for me. Since cutting my hair I've had loads of you say you're tempted to do the same, so I thought I would share my experience with you all in case you were wondering what to expect from your new shorter hair!

Long bobs or 'lobs' are pretty popular right now with the likes of Taylor Swift and Rosie Huntington-Whitely sporting the look, but I'd actually been wanting to get mine cut since about November. However I know what I'm like, one day I'll want no hair, then the next I'll want mermaid locks, so I decided to wait until the new year to give myself a couple of months to properly think about it, because I knew that there really would be no going back. I've had long hair for as long as I can remember, apart from the one time my Mum thought it would be a good idea to cut my ponytail off - less said about that the better, so I knew that this would be a bit of a change for me, and I really wasn't sure that the shorter style would suit me, so I booked a consultation in with an award winning salon in my local area to have a proper chat about my new look. I originally wanted my hair to be shorter at the back than the front, but after speaking to my stylist we decided that it would be better to cut the length all one length and put a longer layer in to create volume, as this would avoid my hair doing that annoying thing when it flicks out - and then I let her cut all my hair off.

It's fair to say that after I had it done, I was pretty distraught. There were tantrums and tears which involved a lot of yelling 'I look like a boy!' which when I think about it now, was a massive overreaction. Fast forward a few weeks and I love my new look. At first I think it was slightly too short for me, but it's been about 4 weeks now and has grown out slightly which is a much easier length to work with in terms of styling and curling it. If you're anything like me and hate going to the hairdressers, then be prepared to hate your new look for a couple of weeks while you get used to it and find a styling technique that works for you.

Since accepting my new shorter look, I love it - not only does it look so much thicker and healthier, but it also takes me half the time to wash, dry and style it, which can only be seen as a win. It took a lot of deliberating, but I've decided to keep my new look and really focus on keeping it looking healthy by having regular trims (I used to go once a year!) and giving it the treatment it deserves.

What do you think?

Lots of Love,

Becky x x

  1. The shorter do really suits you Becky. I too, am almost terrified of having my hair cut too short. Silly really isn't it?! Recently I've been considering having a change, maybe getting a full fringe but worried it won't suit me. Enjoy your shorter do, maybe I'll take the plunge soon. xx

  2. This really suits you! I had my 'lob' cut at the end of summer last year and went through the same crying phase thinking I looked like a boy. I assure you that the more it grows out the easier it is to manage and you'll learn to do a lot more with it :)

    1. I'm completely the same - forever cutting my hair short and then spending years growing it out, just to do it all over again! x

  11. It looks great on you and I was upset when I cut off my mermaid hair to a medium length but I actually enjoy it now and it's so easy to manage. Hope you get it to the way you want.

  12. I am glad you have come round as I think you look stunning and its a much more chic grown up do, I hated my bob because I weighed the most I ever had and was so self conscious but sometimes your hair just needs it xxx

  13. I had around waist length hair for about 15 years and I always loved it but then when I was made redundant 5 years ago I had a crisis of image and I desperately wanted it gone. One day if I could have found some scissors in my boyfriends house I would have chopped it off but luckily I couldn't. So I booked an appointment and went for it. It's now shoulder length and has been since then and I even went the whole hog and dyed my naturally blonde hair dark brown! x
